GM Sponsors Interior Design Contest

April 16, 2011 By Nadeem Muaddi

Aspiring automotive designers listen up: General Motors has announced an automotive interior and exterior design contest for students. Nine winners will be chosen – eight of which will be awarded paid internships with General Motors and another with automotive r&d firm Faurecia. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – so enter now.

Each of GM’s four brands – Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC – has put together a detailed brief of what it’s looking for. Entrants are encouraged to read through the briefs to identify what it is that judges want and use that information to do the best job possible. GM explains:

We’ve found in previous competitions that those students who have studied and produced work which directly answers the brief, or who have developed themes that the brief outlines, have been most successful. We know it’s tempting to jump right in and start uploading sketchwork, but be aware that the judges will be looking not just at what you produce as your final entry, but also at how you developed your work. […]

The judges and mentors are looking for first class work which develops innovative, exciting and well-presented new ideas, and which answers the specific requirements of the brief. In judging each phase of the competition, special consideration will be given to how your work has developed and how you took on board advice from judges, mentors and other commentators.

Note that GM mentions advice from commentators – as this is an online competition where entrants’ work will be displayed live for anyone to see throughout every step of the design-development process. Everyone from judges to the average Joe will be able to view your work as it develops and provide feedback. How entrants respond to that feedback will be a key component to how they’re judged.
