Post Thread and Needle Sizes

Hi folks,

Total noobie here to the sewing machine world. I run a wee company in the UK called Silk Town Leathercraft. I mainly do hand made leather bike seat and accessories. But just lately a lot of customers have been coming to me for sports bike seats and the such. So I've got a highlead walking foot machine and a singer 29k 15. The singer is great for the standard stuff I do. But I'm have problems with the highlead. Not it's use but the minefield that is thread size and needle size. I've been on so many websites and forums and I'm still confused.

I can't get my head round the different thread sizes... tex, s, #. So basically what I'm asking is can people give me a couple of choices for standard thread size and a nice decorative thread size, plus the best needle size to go with both threads. I know there are lots and lots of combinations out there, but for the moment I just need a good choice for most jobs.

Here's some of the work I normally do....

The last one is my first ever vinyl seat for an FJR1300.

Your work looks great! Wish I knew more about leather and working it. I can't really say what's best for your needs but maybe this page can help you out.

We use Amann thread. For standard thread we use a Serafil 20 or Rasant Oxella 25 with a needle between 110-150depending on the thickness of the material.
For a decorative thread we use the Serabraid 800 (needle > 180) or a Serafil 10 (needle>150). But Amann have a lot of download content http://www.amann.com/en/service/downloads/sewing-threads/ and a very good call service.
