Have you guys seen this? There must be a defect in the vinyl inserts on the door panels of the Ford Escape, Mercury Sable, and Ford Taurus. On every one of them the vinyl peels off of the panel.

I must have done a hundred of these door panels. I charge $45 per door panel unless the customer tried fixing it himself with super glue (which always happens). In that case I charge extra to clean up the mess they left behind.

hope somebody has a good answer on the best way to repair these;have tried several ways ;none satisfactory--seems to do better to replace material but what about the foam? it is a pain to clean.40 dollars a door is what I settled on.any input on the what works best for everyone will be appreciated.

The Taurus and Sables are easier than the Escapes. The groove to tuck the vinyl in is deeper. With the Escapes you have to cut the vinyl very short. There's only enough room to tuck about 1/4" of vinyl in.

I use a wire brush to clean the old foam off and a metal putty knife to scrape the grooves clean. I'll reuse the original vinyl if it's in good shape. A lot of times they try to fix it themselves with some cheap glue without cleaning off the old foam and it ruins the vinyl and leaves a clumpy mess. In that case I charge an extra $10 for the cost of the material.

I have done a bunch of these. I agree with you Naseem, there must be a defect. Especially on the Escape. This is what I do. I pull the door handle bezel off of the door. Then I use my fingers to rub off most of the foam. I mask around the outside edges of the insert with blue masking tape. Then I use an 80 grit sanding block to get the rest of the foam off. And maybe an awl to get down in the creases where the vinyl tucks into. I turn down the pressure on my glue gun and spray glue down in the creases. While that's drying, I use the sanding block on the inside of the insert to clean that. Spray that with glue. Pull my masking tape BEFORE the glue is dry but AFTER it has set long enough so it's not 'wet'. It's a fine line. Peel it to late and the glue peels out of the creass with the tape.Let the glue finish drying. Then I start at the door handle and work my way out slowly using my hands and a tucking tool. Then I take a mallet and my tucking tool and go around the edges making sure that they are deep in there. Then go over the whole thing with a roller. If you don't back the vinyl with foam, you can see the imperfections in the door panel coming through the vinyl but, I am always upfront with the customer and I give them the option to foam it or not. I think it is better without foam because of the reasons that you listed. We charge around $55-$70 per door unless we are making new inserts, then it's more. I have only had one come back because it fell back down. I fixed it and have not seen it since.

I've done several. Large greenhouse area allows the interior to heat up and cooks the foam. I do a door for $50 if we reuse the material (I too eliminate the foam layer so it doesn't happen again).

I'm not sure what's the factory color. I usually just find a close matched vinyl in my shop

I seem to get more of the Honda Accords from the late 90's with this problem, don't recall any of the Ford products coming thru my shop yet, but my shop is on the east coast of Canada so maybe our colder winters help prolong the trouble from rearing it's head.

Lousy engineering is what I"ve been complaining about for decades. If they would wrap the material around the back before they assemble it, the material probably would not fall off, come loose, but not fall off. The same thing happens to headliners, because they cut the edge clean now, whereas most of the manufacturers used to wrap the material around the edges. On the other hand, if they get smart we would also be out alot of business. Back to the Ford problem, I have encountered quite a few of these door panels where not only is the material coming off the panel, but the inserts plastic welds have popped snd the insert panel has come off partially oHr completely. I rarely just reglue the material back in place. I will if its just one panel with zero warranty. What I do is pop the plastic welds holding the insert on, quick sand off the old material and foam, set the insert back in place and drill six holes for christmas tree type push fastners. Cover the insert with 1/4" foam and wrap it around the back with what material the customer agrees to pay for. I usually charge about $50 per panel depending material cost. After the panel is covered just push into place and your done. I have never had one fall off or come back. In fact a couple of times the customer had me upgrade the material later and the panel just popped off and on very easily.

I like your technique for the door panels, I'll have to try that. Thanks Dok

You're right about the headliners. I never understood why they just don't wrap the material on the backside in the front and back where there are no moldings.
