While we're on the subject of glue, I'm interested in hearing what everyone here does to protect themselves from the dangerous fumes we auto trimmers are exposed to everyday.

I've been around glue fumes all my life - and to be honest, I don't really mind the way it smells. I know that it isn't healthy to be around, but a lot of times I really can't help but be exposed to it. Our shop is small and when one person sprays, everyone smells it.

We used to enforce a dust mask rule, but that really does nothing. We then invested in some high-grade gas masks, but they're not used very often.

What does your shop do, if anything, to combat the long-term negative effects of prolonged exposure to this stuff?

Ehh nothing too much you can do I guess. We try when we spray, to keep the doors open all the time 2mandoors and 1 12x12 garage door with fans blowing it around. Winter time, nothing. Respirators if we need to glue a lot of things at once.

You can get cancer from just sewing at your machine due to all the chemicals being disturbed from the needle. You dont see people wear air supplied masks do you? lol Maybe we should start though, a gentleman around here recently died from all kinds of problems from being in an upholstery shop all his life..

We were thinking about building a separate room where we would do all our glue spraying as well as painting for our other business. The small area of the shop would be closed off and have extra ventilation. It might not get used all the time but when alot of spraying is required I think it would come in handy.

HAHAHA

Between the fumes from the glue, cleaners, spray paint, and my Dad's cigars my lungs are doomed.

When people mention the smell, I just smile and say "I love getting stoned at work."

When I first opened at this shop, the insurance company adjuster came and checked it out, and tried to say we needed to install a spray hood. Yeah, right. Like every time I pull out the gun, I"m going to haul the piece under a hood to spray it. hahaha. My agent called the company and explained that it just wasn't feasible and they needed to get their heads out of their backsides.

I've gotten to where I don't even smell the glue anymore. But when I sandblast, I make sure to have on a respirator mask along with teh blasting hood.

I suppose we really don't have much of a choice in the matter, huh? lol

This is sad. I hate to think of the damage that's being caused. Our shop is too small for a separate paint-booth type room. And spraying outside or with the garage doors up is only possible during the summer.

They should artificially scent these things - making them smell like spring flowers - so we can at least fool ourselves into believing they're safe.

it seems like a suction hood over the work area would work well. maybe not 100% but seems like it would catch about 60% of the stuff going in the air, which is better then nothing right?

our current setup for our other business is a good kitchen hood fan above the work area. when we spray mold release we just make sure the hood is turned on and leave it on for 30-60 minutes after. we're spraying a small area with a spray can, but if you got something the width of 3-4 hoods and had some good fans in there...it seems like it would do well.

I have used a paint respirator for glue in enclosed areas.

Glue out here is all low VOC. However OSHA is cracking down on shops that cut acrylic canvas with a hot knife without a fume hood as it contains trace amounts of formaldehyde. I know of two lawsuits pending. Be careful out there you guys!

Hot knives cause the most disgusting fumes. I used one once and nearly choked. I'll never try it again.
