Ugly Upholstery: Denim Interiors

May 18, 2011 By Nadeem Muaddi

Last year, Fiat debuted a limited-edition 500C designed by Diesel, the brand-name clothing company. Its interior was trimmed in denim fabric, stitched together in bright yellow thread and even featured a fifth pocket – you know, to give it that jeans look.

At the time, I scoffed at the idea – as jeans seldom look good on anything but pants (need I remind you of men’s denim jackets?). But, as it turns out, the Diesel 500C’s interior didn’t look all that bad. Sadly, the same can’t be said for these copy cats…

Hey, at least they didn’t incorporate that horrid 1980’s acid-wash look into their  seat covers…

The top pick, I’d be so ashamed of having put work that BAD into a car no matter the material. Why jeans in a Ferrari? But yes, the seat is pretty decently done. I could see it working in a theme car. I’d say photo #3, they just plain ran out of material and needed something. It’s boring, plain and just looks tacky. As for the last photo, Volkswagen actually offered a Denim Bug back in the 70s.

So it looks like that’s a factory interior in the Bug. While it is still tacky, I can’t badmouth my favorite car. lololol

AMC also offered a denim version in the early 70’s on the gremlin, pacer, and possibly the whole line. I was thinking AMC was the first to mass produce the bad idea. It is kind of unique now.

RETIRED… I BELIEVE JEEP HAD A LEVI EDITION ON THE CJ7 IN THE LATE 1970’S.

Currently looking at buying an old Gremlin and discovered the denim interior from ’73 as an option – also for the Hornet X and later Jeep in 78-79(?)

Ugly is an opinion. Cotton would be comfy but wonder how badly it’ll stain if not rigorously Scotch Guarded. Jeans go with everything… So why not a car interior?

I’d probably buy new denim for a uniform look but my eco-sensibilities would really love to source material from the thrift store!
