The Hog Ring Design Studio: One Year On

April 7, 2015 By Nadeem Muaddi

Auto Upholstery - The Hog Ring Design Studio

Today marks the first anniversary of The Hog Ring Design Studio — the auto upholstery industry’s only free online library of vehicle interior illustrations.

To mark the occasion, we’d like everyone in The Hog Ring community to check out the article titled “More than a Sketch” in the March 2015 issue of Restyling & Truck Accessories Magazine. The author, Jhan R. Dolphin, does a fantastic job of explaining why every auto trimmer should take advantage of this valuable resource.

Below is an excerpt from the article:

Regardless of whether you’re submitting a proposal to a Big Three automaker, trying to attract project sponsors, or building a vehicle for a valued customer, a professional rendering can be the most important tool you can use before actually hitting the garage.

A color rendering is a key element to any proposal, and illustrates just how you intend the vehicle to appear.

“I’m working on more vehicle renderings than ever before,” says David Tucker, a Chicago-area artist and designer. “A lot more project builders seem to understand just how important an original concept rendering can be for helping people to see your vision.”

Tucker recommends investing in at least a couple different perspective views, like a 3/4 –front and ¾-rear. Also, if you’re making significant changes to the interior, a sketch that illustrates your plan will be extremely helpful.

Hiring the service of a respected design artist can be an expensive endeavor, but most always well worth it. Some builders try to get by using only Photoshop, but this is not recommended. […]

The rendering really helped to make sure that we were all speaking the same language and all understood (and agreed with) the build plan. It definitely saved time, money and any disagreement down the road. [read more]

By using The Hog Ring Design Studio, you can produce quality illustrations for customers without paying costly designers. In fact, we commission all our illustrations from a professional artist who leaves out color and detail for you to add with color pencils. This way, you can collaborate with customers to create the exact interiors they want.

When we launched the Design Studio on April 7, 2014, we promised to add at least one new illustration per month to the collection. Since then, we’ve added 17 — representing a range of popular vehicles. Best of all, we’ll continue to do so through 2015.

We hope that you’ll take advantage of this fantastic resource and send us photos of your illustrations come to life. For more details, check out The Hog Ring Design Studio.
