Tesla ‘Jump Seat’ Sparks Kidnapping Scare

The Hog Ring - Tesla Jump Seat Sparks Kidnapping Scare

Sounds like someone didn’t read our article on jump seats…

Concerned citizens in Santa Clara, California, recently called the police on a man they spotted opening the rear hatch of his Tesla Model S and strapping a kid inside. Police, fearing a kidnapping, sped to the scene and held the man at gunpoint.

According to local reports, it took the vehicle owner some time to convince skeptical officers that he was merely buckling his child into the vehicle’s rearward facing jump seat.

After a lengthy on-scene investigation, they finally understood.

“It was not a kidnapping,” Lt. Rob Hahnlein told The Signal.

“The new Teslas have a weird back seat and when they put the (child) in the back seat it looked like they were putting them in the trunk.”

It’s not clear if anyone questioned why a kidnapper would attempt to hide a child in a part of the car surrounded by windows…

“We’re not Tesla experts,” said Hahnlein.

Clearly.

For the record, this isn’t the first time something like this happened. In October 2015, another family driving in a Tesla Model S was stopped by police responding to a possible kidnapping. Fortunately, their guns weren’t drawn.

Haha when I was young my moms station wagon had a rear facing seat and it was the seat we all fought over. No one thought it was weird in the early 90’s? Did people already forget about these type of seats?

Same here! We used to love sitting in that backseat, making funny faces at the drivers behind us.

Those station wagons were so common, it blows my mind that people don’t remember the folding jump seat.
