Some industry experts believe the auto industry’s shift to electric vehicles will spell the end of leather interiors — but Pecca Group doesn’t seem to think so.
The leather upholstery maker recently unveiled plans to expand its reach to the electric vehicle (EV) segment. In fact, Pecca Group just signed a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) to collaborate on EV parts and technology, according to The Star.
“The company has already started talking to some auto companies involved in EV, and they have expressed their intentions to work with Pecca,” Datuk Teoh Hwa Cheng, Pecca’s managing director, told the newspaper.
Teoh said Pecca Group plans to produce leather interiors for electric vehicles, and later expand to other interior components.
“EV is a good (future) direction,” executive director Teoh Zi Yuen added.
Of course, not everyone thinks so. In the United States and Europe, many automakers that produce electric vehicles either don’t offer leather interior options or are quickly phasing them out. The reason, of course, is that environmentally conscious buyers believe its contradictory to pair EVs with leather, a material they say is unsustainable.
It’s a ballsy move by Pecca. We’ll be watching closely to see how it pans out.
