Magna Debuts 100% Recyclable Foam and Upholstery

September 4, 2024 By Nadeem Muaddi

The Hog Ring - Magna Debuts 100% Recyclable Foam, Padding and Trim

Automotive supplier Magna has developed the industry’s first 100% melt recyclable foam, padding and upholstery for car seats.

EcoSphere eliminates the disposal of foam, pads and upholstery in landfills by utilizing mono-material polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with the company’s innovative 100% Melt Recyclable Foam and Trim system, Magna announced in a news release.

The company says the seating material meets industry standards for look and feel while reducing environmental impact.

“As a top priority for our stakeholders, we recognize the need for innovative solutions that minimize environmental impact,” said Carrie Young, chief engineer for seating innovation at Magna. “This unique product family enables our seating materials to be repurposed and reused in the creation of new polyester products, contributing to a circular economy approach. Our technology offers automakers a game-changing opportunity to enhance sustainability without compromising on comfort, quality or performance.”

If the foam, padding and upholstery are as good as Magna says, it’s a significant advancement for the industry and a positive step forward for the planet. We don’t know of any automakers currently using EcoSphere, but we’re looking forward to when they do.
