Mini Wants to Make its Interiors Fully Recyclable

The Hog Ring - Mini Wants to Make its Interiors Fully Recyclable

Mini aims to manufacture a car with an entirely recyclable interior “within a generation.”

Kerstin Schmeding, the automaker’s head of color and trim design, told Auto Express that such an eco-friendly interior could be realized in the early 2030s.

A fully recyclable cabin is “something [Mini is] truly targeting; this is the right way to go,” Schmeding said. Their Research & Development team is still investigating durability and other technical aspects, but says it’s “definitely possible.”

Schmeding says Mini has already taken steps to realize this goal. The Mini Aceman, for example, has a dashboard made from 90% recycled polyester. “From a material standpoint, it’s very special,” she said. “The dashboard has some completely new technology; by cleaning up the surface, it gives the dashboard a really nice finish.”

In fact, Schmeding says the recyclable nature of this future interior shouldn’t impact its quality — but consumer will be the judge of that.

If Mini is able to pull this off, it will have achieved a milestone for the automotive industry.
