Review: A Game Changing New Headliner Suede has Arrived from Big Z Fabric

May 29, 2025 By Naseem Muaddi

The Hog Ring - Review- A Game Changing New Headliner Suede has Arrived from Big Z Fabric 1

If you’ve been in this business long enough, you already know: suede headliner fabrics look great, but can be stiff to work with — especially on headliner boards that have deep concave pockets or tight curves.

That’s why we were excited to try Big Z Fabric’s bonded suede headliner. We heard it was different — very different.

So we picked up a few yards, put it through real-world testing, and came away seriously impressed.

Here’s everything we found — the good, the better, and why this might be the only suede headliner we stock going forward.

It Stretches Like a Dream

Right off the bat, the standout feature of Big Z’s bonded suede headliner is its insane stretch and flexibility.

We’ve used a lot of suede-style headliner fabrics over the years, and most of them are pretty stiff. But Big Z’s fabric is just as stretchy as regular headliner cloth.

It can be pulled in any direction — lengthwise, widthwise, diagonally — you name it. And not just a little. It gives you serious elasticity without feeling like it’s losing integrity. Best of all, it conforms beautifully to complex contours without the need for cutting, relief cuts, or excessive effort.

This improved workability translates to faster installation times. If you’ve ever had to cut and sew headliner material to fit stubborn spots, you know how much time and frustration that adds to a job. With Big Z’s suede, you can practically kiss that extra step goodbye. In fact, we’d be hard-pressed to imagine a headliner board so complex that this fabric couldn’t handle it in one piece.

Quality DuroLast® Construction

The material is 58” wide, which is more than enough to cover most headliner boards — with the exception of some extra-wide SUV models.

It’s made from a blend of 92% polyester, 8% spandex on the top layer, backed with 3/16” polyfoam. The foam is firmly laminated, which is important. One of the first things we check with any headliner fabric is the foam bonding. If the foam wants to peel or delaminate from the fabric layer, you’re asking for callbacks. We pulled and twisted this stuff deliberately, and the foam stayed married to the suede.

Compared side-by-side with two other suede headliner fabrics in our shop, Big Z’s held up just as well or even better during stretch testing, and the foam looked uniform throughout. That kind of consistency is key, especially when you’re working with big surfaces and don’t want to deal with soft spots or bubbles over time.

Sleek, Premium Look

This fabric looks fantastic.

First off, it has a more subtle nap than other suede headliner materials, which gives it a clean, refined appearance that we think looks better overall.

It’s incredibly soft to the touch, bends and folds easily, and doesn’t leave behind creases or blemishes — even when manipulated during tricky installs.

Big Z offers it in 13 colors, ranging from your go-to staples like black, grey, and beige, to some bold options like yellow, red, pink, and blue. Color saturation is excellent, and the fabric dyes are consistent across multiple yards.

If you’re going for that luxury OEM or high-performance custom interior vibe, this material fits the bill. It has a premium, understated elegance.

Great Price, Better Discounts

Starting at $16.79 per yard, it’s already priced competitively. But Big Z sweetens the deal with volume discounts that make it even more attractive for busy shops:

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Buy 5+ yards = 7% off
  • Buy 10+ yards = 9% off
  • Buy 20+ yards = 19% off
  • Buy 30+ yards = 28% off
  • Buy 100+ yards = 33% off

If you’re like most auto upholstery shops, you’re using shades like black and grey constantly. At that rate, it just makes sense to buy in bulk.

The Bottom Line 🥇

After several weeks of stretching, gluing and wrapping, we can say with confidence: Big Z Fabric’s suede headliner is fantastic.

The stretch is unmatched. The foam bonding is rock solid. The look and feel is premium. And the price — especially with the volume discounts — is hard to beat.

Basically, it’s everything a professional trimmer could ask for.
