There’s Something Furry in the new Aston Martin

November 1, 2013 By Nadeem Muaddi

Auto Upholstery - The Hog Ring - Aston Martin Lagonda Concept

It looks like a diamond-quilted bear pelt. I can’t quite figure out what to make of it.

The furry fabric wraps around the Aston Martin Lagonda Concept’s front- and back-seat backrests and comes with matching pillows. It looks as comfortable as it does peculiar, but not all that pretty.

We know the Lagonda Concept  is based on the Mercedes-Benz GL, but its seats sure aren’t. While I applaud the automaker for thinking outside the box, I’m curious what inspired such an off-the-beaten-path idea. If anyone has some insight, please share.

What do you think? Let’s have a round table discussion. Tell us what you think about this fur-frenzied Aston Martin interior in the comments section below.

I think the seats look amazing but the fabric in question looks cheap…and because of the 3 dimensional look of the fabric it leaves a frazzled edge where it meets the leather…I think it would look better with some kind of fur on hide but that would not be very PC…very cool designed seat though.

I second that – the seats look great. The fuzzy stuff less so. I suppose this is the point of a concept car – see what works in the real world as opposed to on a drawing board. Personally, I would far prefer an unpleated look – be it fur or faux fur – as that accent piece.

Nadeem – I like the way you’re always trying to keep up with the trends on the design end of our trade. It gives us trimmers some knowledge to use in our conversations with customers when we’re consulting with them about design options.

As for this Aston Martin design . . . it’s an extension of the fashion movement you featured in your recent article about the partnership between automakers and the fashion industry:

It’s great to be able to express an artistic vision like this. It doesn’t work for me, but it must work for some people. There will always be a certain segment of car buyers – especially on the luxury end, who want something different. This is definitely different.

I think you’re right Jim — this interior does seem to take a lot of its design cues from the fashion world.

    Couldn’t agree more on that!

Thanks S-T-I-T-C-H. I appreciate the feedback. There are a lot of exciting (and some bizarre) designs emerging in the industry. They’re always fun to look at.
