If you’ve spent years in an auto upholstery shop — cutting patterns, stitching seat covers and installing soft tops — now’s your chance to share those skills, get paid a killer salary and leave a lasting legacy in the trade.
WyoTech, one of the nation’s most respected names in technical education, is recruiting for a Trim & Upholstery Instructor to join their Laramie, Wyoming, campus. And no — you don’t need teaching experience to apply.
“This is more than a job. It’s a chance to shape the future of auto upholstery, mentoring the next generation of builders, trimmers, and artisans who will carry the torch forward,” says Shawn Nunley, Vice President of training at WyoTech.
If you’re passionate about the craft and want to see it preserved at the highest level, WyoTech is offering you the platform to do just that — with great pay, benefits, and support.
Why This Role is Special
WyoTech’s vision is simple but bold: “Best Training. Best Experience. Best Outcomes.”
That starts with instructors who know their trade inside and out — people like you, with at least 5–7 years of real-world experience in automotive trim, interior fabrication, and upholstery.
This isn’t just a classroom gig. You’ll be doing hands-on work every day, teaching students how to shape custom panels, build seats from the frame up, stitch inlay patterns, and even handle convertible top mechanisms. You’ll get to share your methods, tricks of the trade, and time-earned wisdom while working alongside others just as passionate about craftsmanship.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead hands-on training in everything from repairing seats to full custom interiors.
- Teach fabric, vinyl, and leather installation, carpet work, panel fabrication, convertible tops, and more.
- Guide students in shop safety, tool use, and professional-grade workmanship.
- Use WyoTech’s systems to track student progress and keep instruction organized.
- Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging students to take pride in their work and professionalism.
What WyoTech Is Looking For
You don’t need to be a certified teacher or have classroom experience. What you do need is:
- At least 5–7 years of industry experience in trim and upholstery (automotive, RV, aircraft, marine, etc.).
- A strong understanding of hands-on techniques and the ability to break them down for beginners.
- A positive, team-focused mindset and a desire to help others grow.
- Basic computer literacy (they’ll train you on any educational software).
Pay and Benefits
WyoTech will pay you $65,000 to $90,000 a year based on experience.
You’ll also get a full benefits package, including:
- Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
- 401(k) with matching
- Paid time off
- Relocation assistance
- Six months of free housing
- Professional development opportunities
“The salary and benefits are solid, but that’s just the start,” Nunley says. “At WyoTech, you’ll have access to a top-tier shop outfitted with the latest equipment — and yes, you can even use them on your own projects when you’re not teaching.”
“It’s like getting paid to have fun and level up your own game!”
Why Laramie, Wyoming?
Laramie is a tight-knit, outdoorsy town with a strong sense of family and community. If you love fresh air, mountain views, and a slower pace of life, this is the place to be.
“Laramie will surprise you in all the best ways,” says Nunley. “It’s got that small-town feel where people wave to you on the street, but there’s a deep appreciation for craft and hard work. It’s the kind of place where you can focus, breathe, and really pour yourself into the next chapter of your career.”
Laramie is quintessential America.
Make Your Mark. Leave a Legacy.
Auto upholstery is an art form. It’s a skill set passed down from master to apprentice — one stitch at a time. At WyoTech, you’ll help preserve that tradition while preparing students for careers they can take pride in.
If you’ve ever thought about “what’s next” in your career, this might be it. You’ve already mastered the trade. Now it’s time to teach it.
