West Coast Customs: Making Seat Patterns

September 19, 2013 By Nadeem Muaddi

Auto Upholstery - The Hog Ring - Ish West Coast Customs

Ish Jimenez of West Coast Customs – the man responsible for inspiring a whole new generation of auto trimmers in the early 2000’s – shares a few tips on copying seat patterns in the following video.

It’s a simple, quick four-minute lesson intended for beginners. The biggest takeaway? Using markups and notches will save you a lot of unnecessary aggravation…

For more tips by Ish, check out his other videos.

I’m a fan of West Coast Customs. Ish is a fantastic trimmer. It’s good to see a fellow trimmer getting the recognition well deserved!

i have a couple questions…first why was ish not cutting lenghwise into the material? wont his knap direction be wrong? also an additional half inch? i realize that material shrinks over time but 1/2in seems a bit excessive? there was sure alot of wrinkles after he got the bolster installed

Chad – When Ish cut the old cover apart he didn’t cut the threads from the top stitch so when he traced the pattern, the 1/2 inch he added is for the seam allowance that is the shrinkage he was talking about when you sew the pieces together. You are correct on making sure you have the nap and/or stretch going in the right direction.
