From SMS Auto Fabrics to Congress?

November 17, 2013 By Nadeem Muaddi

Auto Upholstery - The Hog Ring - SMS Auto Fabrics

Here’s something interesting that you don’t hear about every day — Ben Pollock, who grew up working in his family’s company SMS Auto Fabrics, is running for U.S. Congress.

The 28-year-old Republican candidate from Oregon previously worked as an intern and then aide for Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. He also worked for Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich’s campaigns in the last presidential election. He holds a masters degree in public policy from American University in Washington, DC.

According to his campaign website, Pollock is running as a “citizen legislator,” pledging to not serve more than two terms in Congress so as to ensure the public that he will not be “cozying up to interest groups.”

Of course, as an auto upholstery news website, The Hog Ring is not endorsing Pollock. We just think it’s really exciting to see someone from within our industry challenging the powers that be in such a big way. To read more about Pollock’s platform, visit his campaign website.

And if you speak to SMS Auto Fabrics, congratulate them on raising such a smart kid!

Well, this article could certainly spur a lot of conversation. First, we’ve had lots of conversations about SMS and the trouble they’ve had over the years. People do think they have improved, although I can’t verify that from personal experience.

I do not have any intention to attack this young man personally, but to say that anyone trying enter politics is “smart” is making some assumptions that I don’t think the majority of Americans would agree with right now, especially if that person learned about politics from Steve King.

I so want to get my politics on here, but will refrain. There is one point, though…two terms in the House is 4 years, barely enough time to get going on committees and such. Especially with needing to get a reelection campaign moving. While I wish him the best of luck, a self-imposed two term limit is ill advised.

OK, Geoff. We can duke it out in private. Although we don’t have PM via The Hog Ring, I know your email address. 😉
