Renault might be the latest automaker to ditch animal leather, according to a press release from PETA France. The animal rights group says that following discussions with the French automaker, Renault has agreed to eliminate leather across its entire lineup by the end of this year.
That’s right — no hides in any new Renaults come 2026. At least, that’s what PETA is saying.
“By choosing cruelty-free materials, Renault is helping spare clever cows, reduce its carbon footprint, and prove that compassion and innovation go hand-in-hand,” said James Fraser, Senior Corporate Liaison at PETA France.
The automaker hasn’t confirmed the decision publicly, so it’s unclear whether this is an official policy shift or just a direction Renault is leaning into. Either way, it’s part of a growing trend among automakers to move toward sustainable, animal-free interiors.
In fact, Renault’s latest models — including the 5 E-Tech Electric, Symbioz, and Rafale — already feature seats made from recycled textiles and plastic waste. It’s a notable pivot from traditional materials and aligns with shifting consumer preferences toward more eco-conscious options.
PETA, of course, is cheering the move. The group points to its Vegan Car Interior Survey, which shows rising demand for leather alternatives, especially among younger buyers. They also cite animal welfare concerns and environmental impacts — noting that more than 1 billion animals are killed annually for their meat and/or leather, and that the industry contributes significantly to pollution and deforestation.
Still, it’s worth noting that Renault hasn’t issued a formal announcement confirming a full leather phase-out. They’ve also not responded to our request for comment. So whether this is a bold new policy or an evolving design philosophy remains to be seen.
One thing’s for sure: the push for sustainable interiors is gaining serious momentum — and that has big implications for the global auto interior industry.
Stay tuned. If Renault’s truly going leather-free, others may follow.
