Raising the Roof with Drop Top Customs

March 22, 2013 By Nadeem Muaddi

The Hog Ring - Auto Upholstery Community - Drop Top Customs 1

Since 1976, Drop Top Customs of High Springs, FL has been converting hardtop coupes and even four-door sedans into fully functioning convertibles built with a quality that challenges the likes of OEMs.

These aren’t your typical backyard-hack jobs assembled with conduit piping for a frame. These convertibles have specially built hydraulic frames fitted with Haartz Stayfast canvas and heated glass-window assemblies.

Every trimmer can appreciate the amount of work involved in such a project. Just thinking of all the necessary modifications needed to the body, trunk, header panel, rear seat and door panels blows my mind. Not to mention all of the fabrication needed to make a functional and water-tight convertible-top frame.

No one does it like Drop Top Customs. They’ve been in the game for nearly four decades cutting the roofs off of Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar and other makes.

4 door cab??…i bet the drive, scuttle shake is appalling unless the chassis has been reinforced?

    According to their website:
“We reinforce the car substantially, inside and underneath. There are beams in the rocker area and elsewhere underneath, gussets at the center and rear doorposts, steel channels at the rear deck and beams connecting the rear shock towers. The cars are exceedingly strong and stay that way over the years.”

RETIRED..So Are There Standards Or Ratings For The Reinforcements Being Made Here? I Remember In The 90’s Kits Being Sold To Convert Pickups Into Convertables. I Had A Neighbor Who Choped The Top Off His Mazda Pickup. They Usually Need A Little Trim Work After.

So what does this do to the crash rating on the car? Cars are now engineered to redirect the force of the crash around the occupants. They have just changed everything.

Drop top customs have done an incredible job on transforming these regular coupes into stunning drop tops! These guys truly know what they are doing! By the way, do they offer a windblocking tech to ward off the wind noise and buffeting as well? Well, my drop top was so bad at tackling these bogeys that I had to mount a wind deflector to get rid of it. But to my relief, the TopDown windscreen that I installed on my Cabrio is giving me hush and turbulence-free rides every time I tuck the roof away in the rear.

You are absolutely right about the wind noise and buffeting, a wind deflector is definitely a crucial equipment to keep these problems under control. On my Cabrio, I have mounted a Windblox windstop to get rid of these annoyances.

Drop top customs does a spectacular customization on any car. They had suggested that I go with the Backblade wind deflector on my Vert. Thanks a lot. Now my ride is super quiet and turbulence free.

Yes, without a draught-stop in place one cannot truly relish open-top motoring. I have something called a Backblade windblocker affixed on my ride, and it’s doing a fantastic job of keeping the wind noise and turbulence under control.
